Rodbaston Campus, South Staffs College
South Staffordshire College’s Rodbaston Campus was one of 46 colleges successful in their application for Enhanced Renewal Grants to help fund the build of their new Foster Centre for Learning. The 1500m2, two-storey steel framed building clad with gabions, timber and curtain walling boasts the latest environmentally friendly technologies such as thermal massing within the structure of the building, rainwater harvesting and a renewable energy heating system.
As part of the funding arrangement, the building was required to be BREEAM Excellent and open within 18 months so that there was minimal disruption to the campus.
WHAT WE DELIVERED
Working with Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems with the mutual aim of helping the client achieve the BREEAM rating required, Alu-Timber was chosen for the windows, doors and framing. Combining sustainably grown FSC / PEFC timbers with 100% recyclable aluminium, Alu-Timber provided low U-values to achieve current legislation along with peace of mind for the client that the façade will last with minimal maintenance.
The recessed entrance way feature picture-frame windows which added an architectural aspect to the westerly views of the building.
ABOVE AND BEYOND
With technical expertise on hand, Allied Glazing Systems attended pre-site meetings to provide detailing and design advice for the specifiers which helped ensure that the project ran smoothly, met site deadlines and helped achieve the BREEAM rating of Excellent.
